August 24

6 January 2025

Earlier in the year I was lucky enough to be selected as one of two representatives from the UK in the Global Sheep Forum next generation program by the NSA. The forum aims to bring together sheep producers from across the world to share issues and opportunities to work together to find solutions and opportunities for the global industry. The next generation cohort brought together some amazing young sheep producers from the: US, New Zealand, Australia, Canada and UK. We headed to Adelaide for the first week in August, spending the first week touring round some cutting edge farms in South Australia and spent the last two three days at the LambEx conference. We all learned a huge amount, saw some inspirational people and farms, and made some brilliant connections. I really enjoyed the experience and learned so much.

Once home it was straight back into a relatively busy period at home on the farm; where we were finishing up harvest (which was slightly poorer than average), and back fat scanning the Lleyn lambs. They had grown a bit slower than last year, which is possibly down to the forage availability and quality earlier in the year however they scanned relatively well and we have some of the best Indexes to date. We also tested some of the Lleyn lambs for their IgA and individual FEC samples to help breed for parasite resistance.
